CBD - Federation Square

This is Alex, one half of the brother-sister design duo behind the Melbourne label Alpha 60. In my opinion, they are one of the most progressive Australian designers we have to date. And their pieces hint at that alluring offbeat sensibility, just like the characters in Godard’s film Alphaville (an intended reference, I don’t know?!).

I’m expecting really big things for this label... the fact that they have been stocked at the three-story shopping emporium, Loveless in Japan, is but a small indication of their continued future success.

As soon as Kate Moss was spotted with a higher waistline at the Topshop runway show during London’s Fashion week, a new direction was heralded.

Now here is the latest Melbourne incarnation, in the form of the high-waisted short. Here, this girl uses the best and most necessary use of the legging trend. With the higher waistline, body hugging leggings eliminate much of the visual volume emphasized on the lower half of the body. Also, the tailored blazer hides the higher cut, but takes advantage of the narrower waist. Very flattering indeed!

The trainers, the sports bag and the canvas belt add a welcome athletic vibe to an otherwise clean pulled together look.

And the winner is...

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards winner is... Doo-Ri Chung.

My pick was Thakoon Panichgul who came runner-up alongside Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. Congratulations to all!

South Yarra - Ellis Street

South Yarra - Ellis Street

A nod to last year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award winners. The Southern California-based Trovata boys are definitely on a road to success with the recent launch of their accessories range. I just have a soft spot for their idiosyncratic details and beach-casual sensibility (see the subtle haphazard buttons).

So who’s your pick for this years coveted CFDA/Vogue award? I’ve got my fingers crossed for Thakoon. His spring 2007 pink peony collection was one of the best of the season. Keep posted as the winner should be announced today in the US.

Now I know these tees are absolutely rampant. But this girl actually made me look twice. She boldly transforms the casualness of the tee with a high-waisted skirt and pumps. Fashion is transformation!

Overall, a perfectly styled suit. Gray is really the best suit colour with patterns, and it’s well contrasted here with the solid black tie. Very sharp. But, I think the jacket arm length could have been taken in a fraction to reveal more of the shirt cuff. The slightest tailoring adjustments would tighten the look. See below (compliments of the sartorialist):

This shot is just so nostalgic of the Parisian streets with its scores of cyclists. Even the guy's melange of accessories is true to French sartorial detail.

Social awareness is fashionable too! Let's see more bikes in Melbourne.

CBD - Tattersalls Lane

Sometimes I find that too many Melbournians feel the need to show too much flesh. But here, the girl's mini dress is so perfectly balanced with long bishopish sleeves. Showing less than more really does heighten the impact on a single focus: here, its the legs.

Oh, and I know this is pre-empting the next season, but mini dresses are my key pick for the forthcoming autumn/winter.

Super crafty and nostalgic - in juicy colored hues. It can only be precious pirate!

Oh so reminiscent of the Stepford wives cotton print dress, but with a dose of nonchalance.

This couple just exemplifies how hair is the ultimate fashion accessory. They breathe life into Maggie Alderson's words that hair can make or break a person's style/silhouette (see Good Weekend 4/11/2006). The girl's solid angular crop is softened with heavy layering. Absolute perfection!

I couldn’t resist this shot. These women just had an air of style about them.

I immediately fell in love with the Fendi peep-toe lace up platforms. When I spotted these, I just had to find out where they were from (for those interested, they’re Mollini)
