CBD - the visual merchandiser

What are you wearing?
Best and Less Bonds white singlet, black and white stripy V-neck t-shirt/dress, a grey long sleeve top with lace trim, skinny leg vintage pair of Chloe jeans that have a tiger appliqué and some grey boots.

Occupation?
Visual merchandiser, fashion visual merchandiser mainly.

How did you get into VM?
I was originally interested in doing fashion design. But decided I wanted something a bit broader. Visual Merchandising kind of encompasses styling, merchandising, interior design, decoration… I work for Diesel International based in Melbourne.

Favorite shops?
I love Euro trash in Chapel Street. I love all recycled vintage stores, you can just find really wacky one-off pieces. You kind of spend the same amount of money on a pair of old Prada shoes as you would at a big chain brand.

Fashion indulgence?
I have an amazing Prada necklace that I picked up at a recycled store. It’s like a massive collar so you just wear it over anything like a t-shirt or dress. And I just splurged on a leather jacket.

Favorite thing about Melbourne?
I like that the weather’s so all over the place… I also love the food, great food.

I thought I knew this lady, but in fact I saw her in a recent film. It was a film for the Freestyle Design exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. She features in the workshop of Susan Cohn (this woman's disc earrings are one of Susan Cohn's jewellery pieces).

But admittedly, it wasn't the earrings that caught my attention. Rather, it was her casual sportswear look. Now I know why there is such a recent wave of sportiness on the runway.. its that ease in dressing.

What are you wearing?
A Michelle Robinson cropped jacket, a Tesla top, just some old jeans I found, and a belt from my mum.

How would you describe your style?
Pretty simple. I wear a lot of black, grey, charcoal, white and navy.
I like playing with proportion. I like wearing high waisted pants and skirts.

Style icons?
Carine Roitfeld. I admire what she wears.

Are you interested in fashion design?
I’d like to get into fashion marketing… there are so many different ways to promote things.

What do you like about Australia?
I think the people are great… Melbourne in particular, I think it has a lot of soul.

I passed by Federation Square the other day and hordes of post Year 12 students were awaiting their tertiary/tafe results. I really think fashion is becoming embedded in our consciousness at a much younger age.

Layering is perfect for summer too. This girl manages to combine a variety of textures and prints without evoking that piled on heaviness of A/W layering.

CBD - The Designer

What are you wearing?
Check jeans, a label done by a friend of mine. Some vintage leather shoes. A black Ben Sherman button up. And a grey lime drop cardigan.

Was the cardigan your own design?
Yes, I do a label called Lime Drop with my fiancée. It’s a guys and girls streetwear label. It focuses on bright colors with contrasting screenprints and a lot of cute kind of designs.

Inspirations for your prints?
A lot of it is a science based theme. Our latest collection is “I fell in love with my librarian.” Silhouettes and styling is reminiscent to childhood feelings… that first love kind of feeling.

Style icons?
I’ve been looking a lot at the dandy’s in the sixties. The mods. I’m also a bit of a fan of the Sharpies in Melbourne.

What’s your favourite thing about Melbourne?
The weather. I like unpredictable weather and the cold.

CBD - The Color of the Season

CBD - Lady Petrova: the online vintage retailer/designer

Personal style?
I’m usually pretty vintage inspired. I love accessories, I love shoes. Always really colourful.

Favorite stores?
I love Camberwell market on Sunday.

Style icons?
They change from season to season. I love Vionnet, old Hollywood costume designers. At the moment, I’m really inspired by Christopher Kane and the collection he showed in London Fashion Week.

Studying fashion?
I studied fashion quite a few years ago at RMIT. Now I have my own label. I have my own online vintage clothing ebay store. I used to design for a shop called Rosemin.

What are you wearing?
A little dress that I found for $16 down Chapel Street. It was just a good find.

Favorite thing about Melbourne?
It’s just a great place to put together a mixture of looks and feel comfortable and run down the street wearing whatever you like without people staring at you like you’re insane. I used to wear some mad things when I grew up in Sydney and people would just look at me like I was an alien.

These jeans are slightly tapered yet so much more forgiving on the body. Is this farewell to the skinny jean?

Happy New Year!

I’m excited to announce that Melbourne Runway will hit the radiowaves on SYN 90.7FM in the new year. It will premiere on Monday 8th January from 2-4pm and will air at that timeslot for the following 8 weeks. The launch show is sure to be promising as designer Mic Eaton from Material Boy will join Melbourne Runway for some candid fashion banter.

With Melbourne Runway on SYN, I’ll be joined by my trusty pal Cecile. Together, we hope to engage not only with established designers but also with new emerging talent. So, if you have a label, and at least one Australian stockist, please get in touch with me via email. We would love to get you into the studio to profile your label.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported Melbourne Runway. To those that have allowed me to take their photographs and to those who continue to add comments, I am truly grateful.

I look forward to more moments of fashion brilliance in the New Year!

Marianne

I was rifling through my photos and came across this. I received a few queries about the Kanye West photo posted about a month earlier. Yes, it is really him.
