Chadstone Shopping Centre

I was dragged by my resolute sister to Chadstone Shopping Centre. It was absolute manic. But all the congestion and mayhem was worth it. Whilst I bought nothing in the sales, I did spot this guy. I love everything about his look, especially the touch of festivity with the candy cane colored shirt.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Seasons Greetings!

It’s good to see all the wintry splendor in fashion for the holiday season (call me a sucker for Hollywood Christmas films!). This guy’s slim fit jacket was a particular stand-out. There were just enough details to make it interesting: the epaulettes on the shoulder and the diamond stitch print on the back.

Metallic gold is a great way to relish in the festive spirit without going for the traditional red and green. I love the versatility of this girl’s metallic top as it really would be just as splendid for eveningwear.

This simple slim cut jacket is so refreshing given all the volume that we’ve seen in the past season. I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more of this silhouette, particularly in trousers and jeans.

NGV - Sneakers: Classics to Customs

A few days ago I attended the Sneakers: Classics to Customs exhibition at the NGV International. This exhibition features over 300 pairs of sneakers from the past three decades. From the functional sports shoe (such as Converse All Stars and Nike Air Jordans) to coveted limited editions. The sneaker has indelibly become the language for urban style.

Although I’m not a huge sneaker fan, I found myself getting giddy at the sight of so many colors and prints. For any sneaker fan, this exhibition is a must.

This look was interesting from the front… but just look at the back.

I’ve seen variations of this shoe everywhere recently. But this has to be my favorite. I’m really loving the trend toward more aesthetically “masculine” shoes, as we’ve seen with the ascendancy of the platform in slick hard shapes and angular graphic forms. These shoes just have a mannish appeal to them. Maybe it’s the multiple brass buckle straps… or maybe it's the image of ancient Rome (and men in togas?!).

Vogue Australia - January 2007

I picked up the latest issue of Vogue Australia and I was unfortunately sorely disappointed.

I guess my biggest irk is that Vogue Australia continues to re-hash editorial from other international Vogue publications (this month’s “Get Happy” spread by Grace Coddington is a prime example).

We’re such global consumers these days and with the internet we can all easily access up to the minute fashion. Even though we are effectively a season behind, we are no longer complacent. I often buy Vogue US or Vogue Paris but when I see the same spreads featured in Vogue Australia a few months later it just doesn’t seem to justify the price to also buy Vogue Aus. For one, we should really cultivate our own photographers, stylists etc. Also, fashion has to capture the zeitgeist… anything that is a month old is exactly that, old!

But essentially all is not lost, Vogue Australia does have a distinct spirit. I for one yearned for it when I was living overseas. I know that Vogue Australia can be a world-renowned publication which rivals its international counterparts. Our designers have spearheaded the way to international success.. now its time for our press to follow!

CBD - Melbourne Exhibition Building

I visited the AFI red carpet last night at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. This photo is of the always angelic Cate Blanchett. Unfortunately, I did not have my usual SLR camera and instead was using a simple point and shoot. And to make matters worse my camera battery died. I was unable to ask Cate for a proper photo but I did ask her who she was wearing. She replied with “Rodarte, a new American brand.”

Cate’s shift was adorned with pleated undulating waves of creamy peach chiffon. The hand-finished subtle detailing in organic forms is a classic signature of Rodarte.

As mentioned in my previous post, Rodarte were runners up in the 2006 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. A spread of all the nominees is featured in the November issue of US Vogue... and how ironic that featured on the cover is the one and only Cate Blanchett!!

CBD - Federation Square

I’ve surprisingly seen A Bathing Ape (BAPE) everywhere recently (see the playful camouflage zip-up jumper). For almost any brand this would be a signal of revered success. But how about for a brand that is founded on exclusivity? This is the dilemma for BAPE which has heavily relied on its underground mystique for its 14 year existence.

With so many limited edition garments and no stockists in Australia (?), how could so many BAPE pieces have landed on our Melbourne shores?

So I visited the Melbourne Design Market today: what beautiful chaos in the Federation Square carpark! And how fitting (after my previous post) that I would bump into Georgie, the sister of the design duo Alpha 60, who was one of a dozen creators selling her wares.

I particularly like the feminine touch to the very reminiscent masculine brogues.
